Really enjoyed this newsletter as I too find myself confused between buying better/luxury but also being financially practical. Wanting to express myself and experiment but not wanting the burden and weight of overconsumption.

Exactly -- I've found shopping secondhand for clothing and furniture to be a good way to score deals without compromising quality -- but I still strong to not over-consume. I do recommend reading Catherine Shannon's essay I linked to and watching the Netflix doc!

Great read as always! How much of the longevity provided from these luxury brands do you think is from the physical durability vs the ostensibly longer term fashionability?

Hm good question -- brands like the Row have longevity by trying to achieve both but most of the luxury brands I see nowadays have to justify higher prices with a baseline level of durability / quality, but don't necessarily need to demonstrate timelessness as part of the value proposition.

I love this! Was so relatable! I watched Mina Lee video too and I especially love the part where she talks about Joanne Didion and her "guide" to a travel capsule wardrobe~ I've started down sizing when traveling and repeating outfits save me piece of mind😌

I loved that too! Doing a "carry on" wardrobe even if you're not traveling is a great way to detox

That's incredible -- mall brands from the 90s and 00s were such good quality!

Thank you !!! The sad thing is that this wasn't always the case -- there's a hollister hoodie I bought in the 7th grade that was so soft and nearly indestructible. If you search up mall brands from the 90s and 2000s you can notice a big difference in quality!

Recently held a tshirt from Enfants Riches Déprimés, and noticed the distressing the tshirt had were intentionally done of course. I feel like part of the reason they charge $800 for a basic tee was to give a sense of lived in authenticity—in a sense you’re paying this extra cash to display you value aging garment.

Not a fully fleshed out thought, but your article shows luxury can come in many ways.
