I also love fashion! I find that reading fashion history and watching cinema allows me to engage with the material (pun intended) more intentionally. Personally, I find myself gravitating to the study of French fashion. A few movies I would recommend: Maria (Netflix more recent), Charade (Audrey Hepburn), & And God Created Woman (Bridgitte Bardot). Foreign films help me marry my interest in style + geography. Cheers! x
great essay (not biased at all!!) and i admire your bravery in going further back in time to see how your personal style has changed
as for some fashion-adjacent films, i think you'd be fascinated by the dresses in phantom thread (2017) and in the mood for love (2000). bling ring (2013) is a fun one to reminisce and poke fun at fashion during the late 2000s, and boyfriends and girlfriends (1987) is a nice peek into casual parisian style, especially for spring/summer. if you happen to be curious about menswear too, jonathan anderson did the costumes in queer (2024)!
so captivating to read about your fashion process and growth. also you deserve to enjoy the devil wears prada for more than 30 sec increments! it’s great
Yes to engaging with fashion in deeper (more meaningful & long lasting) ways than just consuming
